题目:Estimating the long-run human capital effects of early childhood intervention in rural China
摘要:We evaluate the long-run human capital effects of early childhood intervention by conducting a large-scale field experiment on preschool attendance in rural China. Linking administrative records, public security data, and original surveys, we follow 4,694 rural children from preschool through the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). Exploiting village-by-village variation in program rollout since 2009, we find that exposure to the program at ages 3-6 significantly improves educational attainment and NCEE scores, with gains concentrated among STEM subjects. Intervention exposure increases on-time middle and high school graduation and raises NCEE scores by 18.4 points. These gains are accompanied by higher admission rates to elite universities, while effects on admission to average university are small and insignificant. Quantile regressions show that achievement gains are concentrated among upper-middle scoring students. Further analyses on non-cognitive benefits indicate that lower-ability students show increased agreeableness and better teacher-reported discipline, whereas higher-ability students develop a stronger internal locus of control. Mechanism analyses show that rural preschool provides higher nurturing quality than parental care, while children exposed to more classmates benefits from peer spillovers.
