吴曦明教授，2003年获加州大学伯克利分校博士学位。现任美国Texas A&M大学农业经济系教授和美国信息计量研究院研究员。主要研究方向是经济计量学、应用微观经济学和发展经济学。吴曦明教授曾任农业经济学顶尖期刊American Journal of Agricultural Economics副主编（2013-2017），Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics和Applied Economics Journal期刊编委（2006-2009），此外他还曾担任美国应用与农业经济学会计量经济分会主席（2014-2015）。吴曦明教授在Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics等专业领域顶级期刊上发表论文100多篇。

内容提要：

A common practice to summarize a sample of income or other variables is to partition it into a small number of intervals by certain sample quantiles and tabulate the Quantile Interval Means (QIM); the interval boundaries are not reported. We propose a method of distribution estimation based on such QIM's. We adopt an information-theoretic approach and shows that maximizing the differential entropy subject to QIM constraints yields a unique density-quantile function. Analytical forms of corresponding distribution, density, Lorenz curve, Gini index, etc., are readily obtained. We apply our methods to estimate Chinese rural income distributions from QIM (of ten intervals) provided by the Chinese Statistical Yearbooks and explore the evolutions of rural income inequality between years 2000 and 2020.
