    题目一On the Effect of Experimental Quantity on Individual Food Choice Behavior

    摘要: While there is a proliferation of non-market valuation methods in food economics to inform private and public decisions, the issue of experimental quantity has been largely neglected in literature. This paper contributes to the literature by investigating whether and how experimental quantity in food non-market valuations affects individual preference and willingness to pay (WTP) in two perspectives. First, theoretical framework predicts that marginal WTP for quality improvement diminishes as product quantity increases. Meta-analysis of existing food valuation studies with machine learning technique further confirms the theoretical prediction. Second, leveraging mental budgeting, the study explores the impact of the common use of researcher pre-specified quantity in food non-market valuations. As practical application we focus on two discrete choice experiment designs: a conventional design with a researcher-predetermined quantity; and a new design that matches the experimental unit to respondent’s actual purchase quantity. We find that in the conventional design, the marginal utility of money negatively relates to the purchase budget. The variation in price preference results in asymmetric overestimation of WTPs induced by large budget respondents and underestimation from small budget consumers, leading to overall inflated WTP in the traditional design. This pattern, however, is not present in the design where the experimental quantity is matched to respondent’s actual purchase quantity. This study cautions the use of researcher-predetermined experimental quantities in designing food non-market valuation surveys, and proposes an alternative approach that can account for the impact of experimental quantity.

    题目二:Winner or Loser: Urban work Experience and Rural Labor Occupational Change After Return migration

    摘要:Recent decades have witnessed return migration of rural labor While, whether urban work experience could help return migrant rural labor engaged in non-agricultural employment and archive career development? In this article, we employ 2014 China Labor Dynamic Survey (CLDS) dataset to investigate the effect of outgoing working experience on return migrated labor’s non-agricultural occupational change. This article indicates that, compared with agricultural employment, return migrated labor is more inclined to engage in waged employment than remaining village labor. What’s more, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between outside working time and non-agricultural employment preference. Based on the above research, this article puts forward relevant policy recommendations.

    题目三:Does E-commerce Adoption Enhance Technical Efficiency of Wheat Farmers in China? Evidence Accounting for Selectivity Bias

    摘要:E-commerce adoption enables rural households to access markets easily and effectively. While there is a growing number of studies on how e-commerce improves farm performance and reshapes rural society, little is known about how and to what extent e-commerce affects technical efficiency of crop production. This study, therefore, bridges the research gap by examining the impact of e-commerce adoption on technical efficiency of wheat farmers in China. We make novel contributions to the literature by employing a recently-developed selectivity-corrected stochastic production frontier model with propensity score matching to address possible self-selection biases stemming from both observable and unobservable factors. The empirical results show that technical efficiency for e-commerce adopters ranges from 84 to 87 per cent and that for non-adopters ranges from 79 to 82 per cent, depending on how biases are controlled. Our findings conclude that technical efficiency is consistently higher for e-commerce adopters relative to that of their counterparts, highlighting the positive role of e-commerce in promoting efficient usage of production inputs.
