Agri-Food Business: Global Challenges - Innovative Solutions
international scientific conference
25-27 June 2008, Halle (Saale) - Germany

Background
The IAMO Forum 2008 will focus on three global challenges considered to
be of major importance for developments in both the agri-food sector and
its economic and political environment:
Food quality
Bio-energy
Redefinition of Agricultural Policy
The world is currently experiencing changes in consumer demand - a
result of both higher incomes and concerns over product safety and
quality. In order to meet the new required quality, minimum quality
standards are rising and private standards emerging. These developments
cause adjustments at the enterprise, chain and market levels. At the
same time, the tremendously increasing demand for renewable energy has
led to the emergence of a highly promising market for biomass
production. This has far-reaching consequences for resource allocation
in the agri-food business, for the environment, and for agricultural
policy reforms. The challenges increase with ongoing liberalisation,
globalisation and standardisation, all of which change trade patterns
for agricultural and food commodities, and influence production costs
and commodity prices. In the same way, the continuing expansion and
deregulation tendencies of the European Union are redefining the
challenges for business operators - not least of all in Europe. Thus,
the issue for enterprises deciding to participate at the global or local
agri-business level is whether and how to adapt their strategy to the
changing operational environment. Their success depends on the ability
to find innovative solutions with regard to the organisation of
enterprises, chains, and markets, as well as future policy design.

Objectives
The primary objective of the 2008 IAMO Forum is to organise a
multidisciplinary discussion on the above-mentioned issues in Europe and
Asia. The conference will provide a forum for discussing achievements,
options and future needs related to scientifically supporting the
ongoing adjustments in the agri-food sector.
Topics
The conference will particularly address:
Structural changes on traditional markets . Emerging markets such as
bio-energy . Management strategies to meet new demands . Changing trade
patterns . Challenges for future agricultural policy debates (e.g. Doha,
CAP).

Program and Language
There will be three categories of papers: Keynote, invited papers to
stimulate critical thinking and to encourage research into issues
impacting the agribusiness worldwide; contributed papers, and poster
papers to be presented and discussed in parallel sessions. One of the
parallel sessions will be organized by the Chinese Economic Society.
Professor Prabhu Pingali (FAO, the former president of the IAAE) has
been invited to participate at our program as the key keynote speaker.
Based on our previous experiences we expect to attract approximately 150
researchers from about 30 countries. On the first conference day,
scientific exchange will be central, whereas on the second day the
dialogue between scientists and political and other decision-makers in
agribusiness shall be fostered as well. The conference will be held at
IAMO's conference facilities.
Conference language will be English (with simultaneous German
translation on the second day). On the third day, the IAMO Forum will be
concluded by a one-day excursion. We plan a trip to a bio-energy plant
and visits to nice sites in Saxony-Anhalt. For accompanying persons
several activities will be offered, such as a day sightseeing tours in
Halle, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Weimar or a shopping tour.
